Our very own Steve Walton of Triumph East London recently achieved a fantastic victory in the ACU British Sprint Championship and wanted to share a short story of his experience. We wanted to say a massive congratulations to Steve on his victory and we wish him best of luck in the future.
1/4 Mile Sprinting is one of the oldest forms of motorcycle sport in the UK and having tried one at the now defunct North Weald Dragstrip, I was immediately hooked! Since then, I've competed for a number of years with varying degrees of success, including winning the Brighton Speed Trials (which just happens to be the longest running motorsport event in the world) in both 2010 and 2011.
Moving forward a few years, I decided that this year I would concentrate my efforts in contesting the ACU British Sprint Championship, an event that would attract much competition from across the country. The ACU being the main governing body for motorcycle sport in the UK. The championship consisted of 9 rounds at various tracks throughout the UK, including two rounds at Santa Pod, often regarded as the home of British Drag Racing. The championship is made up of 3 capacity classes with unlimited modifications with the highest points scorer overall winning the championship. Although my Suzuki GSX-R1000 is only lightly modified and despite some tough competition (mostly from BMW S 1000 RR's) I had a consistent run of results of results finishing no lower than second in every round that I entered, including a new 1/4 mile personal best of 9.679 seconds at 147.80 mph.
Going into the last round of the year at Santa Pod, I had a slender lead over my main rival and it was really a case of everything to play for at the time, however the weather was to play a major part and heavy rain led the meeting to be cancelled for safety reasons. As a consequence, the results stood and I was confirmed as the ACU British Sprint Championship 2019 winner and spent the rest of the weekend grinning like a cheshire cat!
I've since been awarded a lovely certificate and will be presented with a trophy at the ACU Awards Evening at the National Motorcycle Museum in January, which is apparently not to be missed!
Once again, we wanted to say a huge congratulations to Steve on his victory - if you pop by our Triumph East London dealership in Romford, be sure to say hi to Steve! We look forward to seeing more victories in the future.
